Atlantic Division members of the ACA may want to become more involved with Conservation in our area. The following is a list of organizations and events that ACA members can join and participate with. This list was obtained by visiting local web sites.

The Hudson River Watertail Association Web site http://hrwa.org.  The Hudson River Watertrail Association is a coalition of small boaters, primarily human and wind powered, who are actively interested in the Hudson River as a treasure of natural and human history. The HRWA was formed in 1992 as an all-volunteer, non-profit environmental and recreational action group, with the specific goal of building a river trail from the Atlantic Ocean to Canada and promoting a low impact approach to the river.

The group was born of the realization that the Hudson River was difficult to access or actively use by small car-top boaters, including those interested in multi-day trips on the river. Some of the HRWA’s Activities: Developing a water trail from the mouth of the Hudson to the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway , providing a variety of overnight facilities every 10-12 miles. The trail is designed for limited-range boats. Paddlers currently have the use of a number of such facilities, some of which are available only to rivergoers.

Identifying, advocating for, and negotiating points of access to the river.

Maintaining the trail though local “river stewards” and other volunteers. The HRWA is always seeking additional volunteers to adopt specific sites.

Promoting an ethic of conservation and responsible, non-polluting use of the Hudson River and adjacent waters.

The HRWA also does Hudson River clean-ups and has interesting canoeing and kayaking events listed such as full moon paddles from June 5 thru October 30 2004 contact Walt Thompson,  cleanerhudson@aol.com 845 528-1632.

http://www.clearwater.org/       The Clearwater Festival - Great Hudson River Revival on Father's Day weekend, June 19 & 20, 2004, Croton Point Park , Westchester County , NY .  This festival is the nation’s oldest and largest annual festival of its kind.  It has hosted over 15,000 people on a weekend.  It is a celebration of the environment as well as the beauty of the Hudson River . The festival has live music and many vendors and organizations with information booths. This event is part of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc a nonprofit environmental organization.

Hackensack Riverkeeper: www.hackensackriverkeeper.org is the leading environmental organization working on Hackensack River issues.                                            Canoe/Kayak Rentals

As in previous years, our paddling season runs from the first weekend in April and continues through the last weekend in October. However in 2004, the livery will be open on WEEKENDS ONLY from 9 AM until 6 PM . Those wishing to rent a boat(s) during the week can do so by appointment (call Jared @ 201-968-0808). Group  activities are also available.
Before launching, each paddler will be issued a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and a paddle. You will also be given an aerial photograph, a short paddling instruction and river orientation. Our canoes are large enough to accommodate non-paddling passengers but NO passengers are permitted in or on kayaks.
Canoes: $15 per paddler / $5 per passenger
Kayaks: $20 per paddler
Two to three people per canoe is a comfortable fit and there must be at least two adult paddlers (17 years and up) in each canoe. No solo paddling is permitted; if you want to paddle a solo kayak, bring a buddy for a second boat. Children must be big enough to fit into a US Coast Guard-approved PFD. For safety, there must be a whistle or other loud signaling device aboard each boat (Cell phones do not count. HRI logo whistles are available for sale at $2 each). Bring water, lunch, sunscreen, binoculars, a camera, and anything else that will make your day more pleasant. If possible, please carry everything in a waterproof bag.
