"Sponsor-an-Acre" of Recently Protected
Stewart State Forest
In 1987 the late Ben Kissam founded the
Stewart Park and Reserve Coalition (SPARC), a grass
roots organization with a vision of protecting 7,000 acres
of open space in the vicinity of Orange County's Stewart
Airport.

Due to SPARC's efforts, 5,300 acres were protected by the
creation of Stewart State Forest. SPARC could have declared
victory, could have ended their efforts. They didn't. Seeking to
protect additional lands, SPARC had been pursuing legal action since
2000. In a stunning victory, the State of New York
recently settled the lawsuit by adding an additional 1,700 acres to
Stewart State Forest.
After 18 years of intense effort, SPARC has achieved
their goal and lands that would have been developed as warehouses
and office parks are today protected.
But their victory, for the public benefit of generations to
come, is not without its price.
SPARC
must raise $45,000 to reconcile their legal debt for saving these
additional 1,700 acres. That comes out to only $26 per
acre, a bargain as far as land conservation is concerned, especially
in heavily populated Orange County.
SPARC went out on a limb to protect open space for all. Now,
it is our turn to give back to SPARC.
The Trail Conference is encouraging its members and
friends to make a donation and help retire this legal debt - any
amount welcome!
